Key takeaways
- The UK is five hours ahead of Eastern time for most of the year. Saturday’s classic 15:00 kick-off is 10:00 a.m. ET and 7:00 a.m. PT.
- For about a week in late October and two weeks in March the gap is four hours, because the UK and Canada change their clocks on different dates.
- Kick-off times for broadcast matches are confirmed only a few weeks ahead. Check the official fixture list before you set an alarm.
- If you want to watch two matches at once, for example a Premier League game and a Champions League game, you need two connections.
The five-hour gap, and the weeks it is four
The United Kingdom is on GMT in winter and BST in summer. Canada’s clocks follow a different calendar, so the gap with Eastern time is five hours most of the year, with two short exceptions.
| Period | UK clocks | Gap to Eastern time |
|---|---|---|
| Late October (25–31 October 2026) | Back to GMT | 4 hours |
| Most of the season | GMT or BST | 5 hours |
| Mid to late March (14–27 March 2027) | Still on GMT | 4 hours |
Canada’s clocks go back on November 1, 2026 and forward on March 14, 2027. The UK changes on October 25, 2026 and March 28, 2027.

Time zones: Canada has six: Newfoundland (NT), Atlantic (AT), Eastern (ET), Central (CT), Mountain (MT) and Pacific (PT). Most of Quebec, Ontario and Nunavut’s eastern part follow Eastern time. Saskatchewan does not change its clocks, so its gap to Eastern time shifts by an hour between mid-March and early November.
How the season is scheduled
The Premier League season runs from August to May. Each club plays 38 matches, usually at weekends, with a block of midweek rounds in the autumn and winter. The full fixture list is published in the summer, but the day and time of broadcast matches is confirmed later, so some games move between a Saturday and a Sunday or from the afternoon to the evening.
Plan ahead: Check the official fixture list on Monday or Tuesday for the weekend ahead, and again on the day. Moves are rare once a time is confirmed.
European competitions
Champions League, Europa League and Conference League nights are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The usual European evening kick-offs are 18:45 and 21:00 Central European time, which is six hours ahead of Eastern time.
| Kick-off (Central Europe) | Eastern | Pacific |
|---|---|---|
| 18:45 | 12:45 p.m. | 9:45 a.m. |
| 21:00 | 3:00 p.m. | 12:00 p.m. |
A plan for early-morning matchdays
- Check the kick-off time the night before and convert it with the table above.
- Set the player’s time zone to your own so the guide shows Canadian times.
- Test 20 minutes before kick-off. Open the channel, check picture and sound, and let any app update finish.
- Use a cable or a strong 5 GHz signal. Live football exposes a weak Wi-Fi link faster than anything else.
- Use catch-up if you sleep in. A seven-day guide with catch-up lets you watch a match later without spoilers if you stay off your phone.
Picture settings for football
- Match the frame rate. European broadcasts run at 50 Hz. Turn on frame-rate matching on your streaming device to remove judder on camera pans.
- Use a sports or standard picture mode rather than “vivid”, which oversaturates the pitch.
- Be careful with motion smoothing. A low setting can help; high settings create artefacts around the ball and players.
- Check the audio track. Some channels offer more than one commentary language or a stadium-sound track.
When two matches clash
A busy Saturday morning can bring three matches at once. A plan with two or three connections lets every screen play its own match. If you also follow hockey, our NHL guide has the evening start times.
